About
We need your help to raise $60,000 to start a new non-profit mattress recycling center in San Antonio, Texas.
The Problem
Over 140,000 mattresses are disposed of in San Antonio annually! That’s 4,200 tons of materials that can be recycled!
According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas only has 56 years left of landfill space. Therefore, it’s imperative that we begin diverting mattresses from our landfills now! More and more cities are recognizing this challenge and are searching for solutions.
Re-Mat Proposes to be That Solution
Re-Mat is a Texas nonprofit social enterprise founded in 2017 with a mission to employ disenfranchised members of our community to recycling used mattresses across Texas. We’re working to launch mattress recycling facilities in several metropolitan areas across Texas, starting with San Antonio. We are aligned with and guided by several leading Central Texas nonprofit foundations that have embraced our mission.
We are here to address the needs of Texas cities struggling to find sustainable solutions for disposed mattresses. We are proud members of the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling. Recently, Austin Community Foundation welcomed Re-Mat to the Foundation’s community of givers. Austin Community Foundation offers Fiscal Sponsorship and support to select projects that help further their mission to make Texas a better place for everyone.

How It Works
Our Staff will deconstruct mattresses by hand, separate the materials (steel, foam, ticking, cotton, shoddy wool) and bale them.
We will then sell the baled materials to our downstream vendors for reuse.
We’ve developed our program with the help of several nonprofits currently performing mattress recycling across the nation. Through a combination of processing fees and the sale of the recycled materials, we will approach break-even operational cash flow by the end of our first year of operation. We will offer drop-off and citywide collection services.
